Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Start from how resistance depends on length and area of cross-section.
Hint 2
Think of two wires of the same metal but different sizes, and work out for each.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

I. Resistance of a wire is . The resistivity of a material is the resistance of a wire of that material having unit length and unit area of cross-section. So , and its SI unit is .

II. Resistivity depends only on the nature of the material (and its temperature), not on its length or thickness.
Example: two copper wires of different lengths and thicknesses have different resistances. But when is calculated for each, both give the same value (about ). Hence resistivity is an intrinsic property of copper.
Answer: I. : the resistance of a wire of unit length and unit cross-sectional area; II. Copper wires of any size give the same , so it depends only on the material.
Where the marks are
- Defines resistivity with (1 mark)
- Justifies with an example, such as copper wires of different dimensions giving the same (1 mark)
