CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2025-26: question 36

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2025-26, section C, question 36, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q36 · 3 marks · Short answerElectricity

A student needs to make a 0.12 Ω resistor. She has some copper wire of 0.80 mm diameter. Resistivity of copper is .
(i) Determine the cross-sectional area of the wire.
(ii) Calculate the length of wire required for the 0.12 Ω resistor.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Change the diameter to metres and halve it to get the radius.

Hint 2

The cross-section is a circle. Then use the formula that links resistance, resistivity, length and area.

Hint 3

Make l the subject: l = RA/ρ.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) The wire has a circular cross-section, so .

    Diameter , so radius .

    ½ mark
  2. ½ mark
  3. (ii) Use and rearrange for length:

    ½ mark
  4. Substitute , and :

    1 mark
  5. (about 3.3 m of the copper wire is needed).

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) A ≈ 5 × 10⁻⁷ m²; (ii) l ≈ 3.33 m

Where the marks are

  • Writes with radius 0.40 × 10⁻³ m (½ mark)
  • Obtains A ≈ 5 × 10⁻⁷ m² (½ mark)
  • Uses and rearranges for l (½ mark)
  • Correct substitution with SI units (1 mark)
  • Final length ≈ 3.33 m (½ mark)
