CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 36(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/5/1, section D, question 36(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q36(b) · 5 marks · Long answerElectricity

Answer the following.

  1. (i)

When is the potential difference between two points said to be 1 volt?

    1 mark
  2. (ii)

A copper wire has a diameter of 0·2 mm and resistivity of m. What will be the length of this wire to make its resistance 14 ? How much does the resistance change, if the diameter of the wire is doubled?

    4 marks

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Potential difference is work done per unit charge.

Hint 2

Use R = ρl/A with A = πd²/4, and remember to convert mm to m first.

Hint 3

If the diameter doubles, what happens to the area? R is inversely proportional to A.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) The potential difference between two points is 1 volt when 1 joule of work is done to move a charge of 1 coulomb from one point to the other: .

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Given: , , .

    Area of cross-section: .

    ½ mark
  3. From we get .

    ½ mark
  4. 1 mark
  5. Diameter doubled: , so . Since (same and ), .

    ½ mark
  6. 1 mark
  7. Change in resistance . The resistance decreases by , becoming one-fourth of its original value.

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) When 1 J of work is done to move 1 C of charge between the points. (ii) l = 27.5 m; on doubling the diameter, R becomes 3.5 Ω, a decrease of 10.5 Ω

Where the marks are

  • Defines 1 volt as 1 J of work done per 1 C of charge moved (1 mark)
  • Converts the data to SI units and writes A = πd²/4 (½ mark)
  • Uses R = ρl/A and rearranges for l (½ mark)
  • Calculates l = 27.5 m (1 mark)
  • Shows that the new area A' = 4A (½ mark)
  • Finds R' = 3.5 Ω (1 mark)
  • States the change = 10.5 Ω, a decrease (½ mark)
