Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Amoeba engulfs whole food particles.
Hint 2
Recall the temporary projections of Amoeba and what they form around the food.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Amoeba shows heterotrophic (holozoic) nutrition.
- 1 mark
Amoeba pushes out temporary finger-like projections called pseudopodia. These surround the food particle and fuse over it to form a food vacuole. Inside the food vacuole, complex food is broken down into simpler substances, which diffuse into the cytoplasm. The undigested material is thrown out through the cell surface.
Answer: Holozoic (heterotrophic) nutrition. Food is engulfed by pseudopodia into a food vacuole, where it is digested into simpler substances.
Where the marks are
- Names heterotrophic/holozoic nutrition (1 mark)
- Describes engulfing by pseudopodia, food vacuole formation and digestion inside it (1 mark)
