Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Lymph is the fluid that escapes from capillaries into the spaces between cells. What is it called?
Hint 2
Think about what the lacteals in the villi absorb, and where the extra fluid around cells finally goes.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Lymph is also called tissue fluid (extracellular fluid).
- ½ mark
Function 1: lymph carries digested and absorbed fats from the small intestine (through the lacteals).
- ½ mark
Function 2: it drains excess fluid from the intercellular spaces back into the blood. (It also contains lymphocytes that help fight infection.)
Answer: Tissue fluid; it carries absorbed fats from the intestine and returns excess tissue fluid to the blood (also fights infection).
Where the marks are
- Gives the other name: tissue fluid / extracellular fluid (1 mark)
- States any two functions: transport of fats, draining excess fluid to blood, fighting infection (½ + ½ marks)
