Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which tissue carries water in plants?

Hint 2

What happens to water at the leaf surface, and how does this affect the water below it?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The roots absorb water from the soil. This water enters the xylem vessels, which form a continuous channel from the roots through the stem to the leaves.

    1 mark
  2. Water evaporates from the leaves through the stomata (transpiration). This creates a suction force called the transpiration pull, which pulls the water column up through the xylem from the roots to the leaves.

    1 mark

Answer: Water absorbed by the roots moves up through the xylem, pulled by the suction (transpiration pull) created by loss of water from the stomata of the leaves.

Where the marks are

  • Water is absorbed by the roots and conducted through continuous xylem (1 mark)
  • Transpiration through stomata creates a suction/transpiration pull that draws water up (1 mark)
