CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 25(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/3/1, section B, question 25(b), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q25(b) · 2 marks · Very short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

Name the device used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material. Draw a labelled diagram to show the arrangement used for the magnetisation of a cylinder made of soft iron.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which coil arrangement produces a uniform magnetic field inside it?

Hint 2

Place the soft iron inside that coil and pass current; what do you get?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Device: A current-carrying solenoid is used. When a soft iron piece is placed inside it, it forms an electromagnet.

    ½ mark
  2. Diagram: Draw a soft iron cylinder (rod). Wind a coil of many turns of insulated copper wire closely around it, forming a solenoid. Connect the ends of the coil in series with a battery and a plug key K. Show the direction of current with arrows.

    1 mark
  3. Labels: soft iron rod, current-carrying solenoid (coil), battery, key. When the key is closed, the strong magnetic field inside the solenoid magnetises the soft iron.

    ½ mark

Answer: Current-carrying solenoid (electromagnet). The soft iron cylinder is placed inside a coil connected to a battery and key.

Where the marks are

  • Names solenoid/electromagnet (½ mark)
  • Diagram of coil wound on soft iron rod connected to battery and key (1 mark)
  • Correct labelling (½ mark)
