CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 15

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/4/1, section A, question 15, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q15 · 1 mark · MCQMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

A rectangular loop ABCD carrying a current I is situated near a straight conductor XY, such that the conductor is parallel to the side AB of the loop and is in the plane of the loop. If a steady current I is established in the conductor as shown, the conductor XY will

  1. (A)remain stationary.
  2. (B)move towards the side AB of the loop.
  3. (C)move away from the side AB of the loop.
  4. (D)rotate about its axis.

Figure in the paper: A vertical straight conductor XY (X at top, Y at bottom) carrying current I upward (arrow pointing up). Beside it is a rectangular loop ABCD with A at bottom-left, B at top-left, C at top-right, D at bottom-right. Current arrows: upward on side AB, rightward on side BC (top), downward on side CD, and leftward on side DA (bottom), i.e. the loop carries a current I in the direction shown by the arrows. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Compare the current directions in XY and AB.

Hint 2

Which side of the loop is nearest to XY?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. XY and AB carry current in the same direction (upward), so they attract each other. The opposite current in CD is farther away, so its repulsion is weaker.

    1 mark
  2. The net force is attractive, so XY moves towards side AB.

Answer: (B) move towards side AB

Where the marks are

  • Parallel currents in the same direction attract (1 mark)
