CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 36(B)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/1/1, section D, question 36(B), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q36(B) · 5 marks · Long answerElectricity

(i) Write the relation between resistance R and electrical resistivity of the material of a conductor in the shape of cylinder of length and area of cross-section A. Hence derive the SI unit of electrical resistivity.
(ii) The resistance of a metal wire of length 3 m is . If the area of cross-section of the wire is , calculate the electrical resistivity of the wire.
(iii) State how would electrical resistivity be affected if the wire (of part 'ii') is stretched so that its length is doubled. Justify your answer.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Resistance is directly proportional to length and inversely proportional to area of cross-section.

Hint 2

Make ρ the subject and put the units of R, A and l into the formula.

Hint 3

Ask yourself: does stretching change the material of the wire?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Resistance of a cylindrical conductor: , where is the resistivity of the material.

    1 mark
  2. Rearranging, . SI unit (ohm metre).

    1 mark
  3. (ii) Given m, , .
    .

    1 mark
  4. (iii) The resistivity will not change when the wire is stretched to double its length.

    1 mark
  5. Justification: resistivity depends only on the nature of the material (and temperature), not on the length or area of cross-section of the conductor. (Only the resistance changes on stretching.)

    1 mark

Answer: (i) ; SI unit of ρ = Ω m. (ii) m. (iii) No change, as resistivity depends only on the material.

Where the marks are

  • Writes (1 mark)
  • Derives and unit Ω m (1 mark)
  • Calculates m (1 mark)
  • States resistivity remains unchanged (1 mark)
  • Reason: depends only on nature of material, not dimensions (1 mark)
