Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What eats the plants, and what do the lions eat?

Hint 2

In a food web, a carnivore has several possible prey. How does that change things?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. First trophic level: with no deer to eat them, the number of plants will increase.

    1 mark
  2. Third trophic level: the lions will decrease in number (they may die) because they lose their only food.

    1 mark
  3. No, the impact would not be the same in a food web.

    ½ mark
  4. Justification: in a food web the lions have alternative prey (other herbivores) to feed on, so they would not starve. Food webs are therefore more stable.

    ½ mark

Answer: Plants increase; lions decrease; no, in a food web lions find alternative food

Where the marks are

  • Plants (first trophic level) increase (1 mark)
  • Lions (third trophic level) decrease (1 mark)
  • Impact not the same (½ mark)
  • Alternative food sources available in a food web (½ mark)
