Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Alveoli belong to one organ system and nephrons to another. Which are they?
Hint 2
Think of the shape (sac vs tube) and what each one exchanges or removes.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Structure and location. Alveoli are tiny balloon-like air sacs at the ends of the bronchioles inside the lungs. A nephron is a long tubular structure (Bowman's capsule, glomerulus and tubule) and is the filtering unit of the kidney.
- 1 mark
Function. Alveoli provide a large surface for the exchange of gases: passes into the blood and passes out. A nephron filters blood to remove nitrogenous wastes and forms urine.
Answer: Alveoli: balloon-like sacs at ends of bronchioles in lungs; gaseous exchange. Nephron: tubular unit in kidneys; filters blood to form urine.
Where the marks are
- Correct structure and location of both alveoli and nephron (1 mark)
- Correct function of both: gas exchange vs filtration/urine formation (1 mark)
