CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2024-25: question 29

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2024-25, section C, question 29, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q29 · 3 marks · Short answerLife Processes

Water is used by the leaves of the plants for photosynthesis but rather than watering the leaves, we water the plant through the soil. How does this water reach the leaves of the plant?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which tissue carries water in plants?

Hint 2

What happens to water at the leaf surface through the stomata?

Hint 3

How does this loss of water help pull more water up?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Root cells in contact with the soil take up water (and minerals). The xylem vessels and tracheids of the roots, stem and leaves are interconnected, forming a continuous water-conducting channel from the roots to the leaves.

    1 mark
  2. During the day the stomata are open and water evaporates from the leaves. This loss of water vapour is transpiration, and the transpiration pull it creates is the main driving force for moving water up the xylem.

    1 mark
  3. Evaporation from the leaf cells creates a suction that pulls a continuous column of water from the root xylem, up through the stem, into the leaves. (At night, root pressure helps push water up.)

    1 mark

Answer: Water absorbed by the roots moves up through continuous xylem channels, pulled by suction (transpiration pull) created by evaporation from the leaves.

Where the marks are

  • Roots absorb water; xylem forms a continuous channel from roots to leaves (1 mark)
  • Transpiration through open stomata is the main driving force (1 mark)
  • Evaporation creates suction that pulls water up from roots to leaves (1 mark)
