Q23(B) · 2 marks · Very short answerLife Processes

(ii) Pepsin
(iii) Trypsin
(iv) Lipase

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Match each enzyme to the food type it acts on: carbohydrate, protein or fat.

Hint 2

Recall where each enzyme is secreted: mouth, stomach or pancreas.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Salivary amylase, in the mouth, breaks down starch (a complex carbohydrate) into simple sugar (maltose).

    ½ mark
  2. (ii) Pepsin, in the stomach and working in an acidic medium, begins the digestion of proteins.

    ½ mark
  3. (iii) Trypsin, from pancreatic juice acting in the small intestine, digests proteins further towards amino acids.

    ½ mark
  4. (iv) Lipase, from pancreatic and intestinal juice, breaks down emulsified fats into fatty acids and glycerol.

    ½ mark

Answer: Amylase: starch → sugar; Pepsin: proteins (stomach); Trypsin: proteins → amino acids; Lipase: emulsified fats → fatty acids + glycerol

Where the marks are

  • Salivary amylase converts starch to sugar (0.5 mark)
  • Pepsin digests proteins in the stomach (0.5 mark)
  • Trypsin digests proteins into amino acids (0.5 mark)
  • Lipase breaks emulsified fats into fatty acids and glycerol (0.5 mark)
