CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 26

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/6/1, section B, question 26, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 2 marks · Very short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

State the rule to determine the direction of a (a) magnetic field produced around a straight conductor carrying current and (b) force experienced by a current carrying straight conductor placed in a magnetic field which is perpendicular to it.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

One rule uses a gripping right hand; the other uses three perpendicular fingers of the left hand.

Hint 2

In the left-hand rule, match each finger to Field, Current and Force (motion).

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Right-hand thumb rule: Hold the current-carrying straight conductor in the right hand with the thumb pointing in the direction of the current. The curled fingers then show the direction of the magnetic field lines around the conductor.

    1 mark
  2. (b) Fleming's left-hand rule: Stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the left hand so that they are mutually perpendicular. If the forefinger points along the magnetic field and the middle finger along the current, then the thumb gives the direction of the force (motion) on the conductor.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) Right-hand thumb rule; (b) Fleming's left-hand rule

Where the marks are

  • Correct statement of right-hand thumb rule (1 mark)
  • Correct statement of Fleming's left-hand rule (1 mark)
