CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 32
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/2/1, section C, question 32, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q32 · 3 marks · DiagramMagnetic Effects of Electric Current
Draw a diagram to show the pattern of magnetic field lines on a horizontal sheet of paper due to a straight conductor passing through its centre and carrying current vertically upwards. Mark on it (i) the direction of current in the conductor and (ii) the corresponding magnetic field lines. State right hand thumb rule and check whether the directions marked by you are in accordance with this rule or not.
Figure in the paper: Diagram to be drawn: a straight vertical conductor passing perpendicularly through the centre of a horizontal sheet of paper, carrying current vertically upwards, with concentric circular magnetic field lines around it; the candidate marks current direction and field line direction. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The field lines around a straight wire are circles centred on the wire.
Hint 2
Point your right thumb upwards and see which way your fingers curl when looking down from above.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Diagram (described): Draw a horizontal sheet of paper with a straight vertical wire passing through its centre, joined to a battery and key. Around the wire on the sheet, draw several concentric circles, with spacing increasing outwards.
- ½ mark
(i) Mark an arrow on the wire pointing vertically upwards to show the direction of current.
- ½ mark
(ii) Mark arrows on the circles showing the field lines going anticlockwise when the sheet is viewed from above.
- 1 mark
Right-hand thumb rule: Imagine holding the current-carrying straight conductor in your right hand so that the thumb points in the direction of the current. Then the direction in which your fingers curl around the conductor gives the direction of the magnetic field lines.
Check: With the thumb pointing upwards, the fingers curl anticlockwise as seen from above. This matches the marked field lines, so the diagram agrees with the rule.
Answer: Concentric circular field lines around the wire, anticlockwise when viewed from above for upward current; this agrees with the right-hand thumb rule.
Where the marks are
- Diagram of concentric field lines around a vertical wire through the sheet (1 mark)
- Upward current direction marked (½ mark)
- Anticlockwise field-line direction (viewed from above) marked (½ mark)
- Correct statement of the right-hand thumb rule and the check (1 mark)
