CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 22
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/5/1, section B, question 22, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q22 · 2 marks · Very short answerControl and Coordination
Write the name and function of parts (i) and (ii) in the diagram of a neuron given below.
Figure in the paper: Diagram of a neuron with a cell body containing a nucleus, branched dendrites on the left, and a long axon extending to the right with a myelin sheath (segmented covering) and axon terminals with branches at the far right. Label (i) with an arrow pointing to one of the short branched projections at the top left (dendrite). Label (ii) with an arrow pointing to the long fibre (axon) beneath the myelin sheath segments. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
A neuron has short branched projections and one long fibre. What are they called?
Hint 2
Which part receives the message, and which part carries it away from the cell body?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) Dendrite
- ½ mark
Function: it picks up (acquires) information or stimuli from other neurons or receptors and passes it to the cell body.
- ½ mark
(ii) Axon
- ½ mark
Function: it is the long fibre along which the information travels as an electrical impulse, from the cell body to the axon terminals.
Answer: (i) Dendrite: acquires information; (ii) Axon: carries information as an electrical impulse away from the cell body
Where the marks are
- Names part (i) as dendrite (½ mark)
- Function of dendrite: acquires information (½ mark)
- Names part (ii) as axon (½ mark)
- Function of axon: conducts the electrical impulse (½ mark)
