Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Start with the parts of a neuron: where does information enter and where does it leave?
Hint 2
How does the signal jump the gap between two neurons?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Diagram (structure of a neuron): Draw a star-shaped cell body containing a nucleus, with branched dendrites around it. A long axon runs from the cell body and ends in branched nerve endings. Next to these, show the synapse, the gap between the nerve ending and the dendrite of the next neuron. Label all of these parts.
- 1 mark
Information from the environment is picked up at the dendrite tips of a nerve cell. This sets off a chemical reaction that creates an electrical impulse.
- ½ mark
The impulse travels from the dendrite to the cell body, then along the axon to its end. There it causes certain chemicals to be released.
- ½ mark
These chemicals cross the synapse and start a similar electrical impulse in a dendrite of the next neuron, or in a muscle cell at a neuromuscular junction. This is how impulses are passed along in the body.
Answer: Labelled neuron diagram; impulse path: dendrite → cell body → axon → nerve ending → chemicals released → cross synapse → impulse in next neuron.
Where the marks are
- Correct labelled neuron diagram showing dendrite, cell body, nucleus, axon and nerve ending (1 mark)
- Information at the dendrite converted into an electrical impulse by a chemical reaction (1 mark)
- Impulse travels through cell body and axon, and chemicals are released at the axon end (½ mark)
- Chemicals cross the synapse and start an impulse in the next neuron (½ mark)
