CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 22(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/6/1, section B, question 22(b), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q22(b) · 2 marks · Very short answerControl and Coordination

What happens at synapse between two neurons? State briefly.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The synapse is a gap, so an electrical signal cannot simply jump across it.

Hint 2

Think about what is released at the nerve ending and what it does at the next neuron.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The electrical impulse reaches the axon ending of the first neuron. There it causes the release of chemicals (neurotransmitters) into the small gap called the synapse.

    1 mark
  2. These chemicals cross the gap and reach the dendrite of the next neuron, where they start a new electrical impulse. In this way the impulse passes from one neuron to the next, in one direction only.

    1 mark

Answer: At the synapse the electrical impulse is converted into chemical signals. These cross the gap and set off a fresh electrical impulse in the next neuron.

Where the marks are

  • Electrical impulse converted into chemicals released at the axon end (1 mark)
  • Chemicals cross the gap and generate an electrical impulse in the next neuron (1 mark)
