CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 31(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/2/1, section C, question 31(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q31(a) · 3 marks · Short answerLight – Reflection and Refraction

A student has focussed the image of an object of height 3 cm on a white screen using a concave mirror of focal length 12 cm. If the distance of the object from the mirror is 18 cm, find the values of the following :

  1. (i)

Distance of the image from the mirror

    1 mark
  2. (ii)

    Height of the image

    1 mark

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use the sign convention: distances measured against incident light are negative, and a concave mirror has negative f.

Hint 2

Apply 1/v + 1/u = 1/f and solve for v.

Hint 3

Then use h′/h = −v/u to find the image height.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Given (New Cartesian sign convention): cm, cm (concave mirror), cm.

    ½ mark
  2. (i) Mirror formula: , so

    ½ mark
  3. ½ mark
  4. cm. The image is 36 cm in front of the mirror, which is where the screen is.

    ½ mark
  5. (ii) Magnification: , so

    ½ mark
  6. cm. The image is 6 cm tall, real and inverted.

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) v = −36 cm (36 cm in front of the mirror); (ii) h′ = −6 cm (6 cm, inverted)

Where the marks are

  • Correct data with signs (½ mark)
  • Mirror formula (½ mark)
  • Correct substitution (½ mark)
  • v = −36 cm (½ mark)
  • Magnification formula (½ mark)
  • h′ = −6 cm (½ mark)
