CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2025-26: question 30

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2025-26, section C, question 30, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q30 · 1 mark · MCQLight – Reflection and Refraction

Arnav was making notes and he wrote down the following statements from his understanding of reflection from curved surfaces.
I. Concave mirrors can produce both real and virtual images depending on the position of the object.
II. Convex mirrors always produce real, inverted images regardless of the object's position.
III. In both concave and convex mirrors, the image location can be determined using the mirror formula where f is the focal length, v is the image distance, and u is the object distance.
Choose from the following the correct option that lists the correct statements about reflection from curved surfaces.

  1. (A)I and II
  2. (B)I, II and III
  3. (C)II and III
  4. (D)I and III

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What kind of image does a convex mirror always give?

Hint 2

Does the mirror formula change between concave and convex mirrors?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. I is true. A concave mirror forms real images when the object is beyond F, and a virtual image when the object is between P and F.

  2. II is false. A convex mirror always forms virtual, erect, diminished images.

  3. III is true. The mirror formula applies to all spherical mirrors when the sign convention is used. Correct statements: I and III, option (D).

    1 mark

Answer: I and III, option (D)

Where the marks are

  • Identifies I and III as correct, option (D) (1 mark)
