Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

How many face cards are there in a pack of 52 cards?

Hint 2

Kings come in 4 suits. How many of those suits are black?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Total outcomes = 52. There are 12 face cards (J, Q, K in each of 4 suits), so 52 − 12 = 40 cards are not face cards. P(not a face card)

    1 mark
  2. (ii) There are 2 black kings (spades and clubs). P(black king)

    1 mark

Answer: (i) ; (ii)

Where the marks are

  • P(not a face card) (1 mark)
  • P(black king) (1 mark)
