Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Fix Anil's birthday; how many possible dates are there for Ashraf?

Hint 2

'Different dates' is the complement of 'same date'.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. December has 31 days. Whatever Anil's birth date, Ashraf's date has 31 equally likely possibilities.
    (i) Favourable: only 1 (the same date). P(same date)

    1 mark
  2. (ii) P(different dates)

    1 mark

Answer: (i) ; (ii)

Where the marks are

  • P(same date of birth) = 1/31 (1 mark)
  • P(different dates of birth) = 30/31 (1 mark)
