Case Study 2. A lighthouse stands tall on a cliff by the sea, watching over ships that pass by. One day a ship is seen approaching the shore and from the top of the lighthouse, the angles of depression of the ship are observed to be and as it moves from point P to point Q. The height of the lighthouse is 50 metres.
Based on the information given above, answer the following questions :
- (i)1 mark
Find the distance of the ship from the base of the lighthouse when it is at point Q, where the angle of depression is .
- (ii)1 mark
Find the measures of PBA and QBA.
- (iii)2 marks
(a) Find the distance travelled by the ship between points P and Q.
OR
(iii)2 marks(b) If the ship continues moving towards the shore and takes 10 minutes to travel from Q to A, calculate the speed of the ship in km/h, from Q to A.
Figure in the paper: A photograph of a lighthouse on a rocky cliff by the sea, and a line diagram: B is the top of the lighthouse and A is its base, with BA vertical on the right. P and Q lie on the horizontal ground to the left of A, with Q nearer to A. A horizontal line BX goes from B to the left. The angle between BX and BP is and the angle between BX and BQ is (both angles of depression at B). The angle at P between the ground and PB is marked. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The angle of depression from B equals the angle of elevation at the ship (alternate angles).
Hint 2
Use tan in the right triangles with AB = 50 m to find AQ and AP. PQ is their difference.
Hint 3
For speed, change metres to km and minutes to hours before dividing.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) , so (alternate angles). In right :
- ½ mark
(i) m
- ½ mark
(ii) . So .
- ½ mark
(ii) .
- ½ mark
(iii)(a) (alternate angles). In right :
- ½ mark
(iii)(a) m
- 1 mark
(iii)(a) m m
- 1 mark
(iii)(b) Distance m km. Time min h. Speed
- 1 mark
(iii)(b) km/h
Answer: (i) 50 m; (ii) ∠PBA = 60°, ∠QBA = 45°; (iii)(a) m ≈ 36.6 m; (iii)(b) 0.3 km/h
Where the marks are
- (i) Uses (½ mark)
- (i) Gets AQ = 50 m (½ mark)
- (ii) ∠PBA = 60° (½ mark)
- (ii) ∠QBA = 45° (½ mark)
- (iii)(a) Uses (½ mark)
- (iii)(a) Gets AP = m (½ mark)
- (iii)(a) Gets PQ = m (1 mark)
- (iii)(b) Writes speed as 50 m ÷ 10 min with the units converted (1 mark)
- (iii)(b) Gets 0.3 km/h (1 mark)
