Q32(A) · 5 marks · Long answerSome Applications of Trigonometry
A straight highway leads to the foot of a tower. A man standing on the top of the 75 m high tower observes two cars at angles of depression of and , which are approaching the foot of the tower. If one car is exactly behind the other on the same side of the tower, find the distance between the two cars. (use )

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Each angle of depression equals the angle of elevation at that car (alternate angles).
Hint 2
Use tan in each right triangle to find each car's distance from the foot of the tower, then subtract.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Figure: Let AB be the tower, with m, A its foot and B its top. P and Q are the two cars on the highway, on the same side of the tower, with P nearer to A.
Draw the horizontal line BX through B. The angles of depression are and .
As BX ∥ AQ (alternate angles), and .
