CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2024: question 33

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 30/5/1, section D, question 33, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33 · 5 marks · Long answerSome Applications of Trigonometry

From a point on a bridge across the river, the angles of depressions of the banks on opposite sides of the river are and respectively. If the bridge is at a height of 4 m from the banks, find the width of the river.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw the perpendicular from the point on the bridge to the river; it is 4 m and splits the width into two parts.

Hint 2

The angle of depression equals the angle of elevation from the bank (alternate angles).

Hint 3

Use tan 30° and tan 60° in the two right triangles and add the two horizontal distances.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: P is the point on the bridge, Q is the foot of the perpendicular from P on the line of the banks, PQ = 4 m. A and B are the banks on opposite sides of Q. Angles of depression from P are 30° to A and 60° to B, so and [alternate angles]. Let AQ = x, QB = y; width AB = x + y.
