CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2025: question 32(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 30/2/1, section D, question 32(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q32(a) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry
Two ships are sailing in the sea on either side of a lighthouse. The angles of depression to the two ships as observed from the top of the lighthouse are and , respectively. If the distance between the ships is m, then find the height of the lighthouse.
Figure in the paper: A vertical lighthouse with its top at the upper point. Two ships on the horizontal sea level, one on each side of the base of the lighthouse; the angles of depression from the top to each ship ( and ) are marked. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Draw the lighthouse with one ship on each side; the angles of depression equal the angles of elevation at the ships.
Hint 2
Use tan in each right triangle to write the distance of each ship from the foot in terms of the height.
Hint 3
Add the two distances and equate the sum to the given distance between the ships.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
