Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use the 45° angle with the 20 m building to find the distance of the point from the building.

Hint 2

Then use tan 60° with total height (20 + h) over the same distance.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: AB = 20 m is the building, BC = h m is the tower on top of it, D is the point on the ground with AD = x m; , , .

  7. m. Height of the tower is 14.6 m.

    ½ mark

Answer: Height of tower = m = 14.6 m

Where the marks are

  • Correct figure (1 mark)
  • tan 45° = 20/x (1 mark)
  • x = 20 m (½ mark)
  • tan 60° = (20 + h)/x (1 mark)
  • √3x = 20 + h (½ mark)
  • h = 20(√3 − 1) (½ mark)
  • h = 14.6 m (½ mark)
