Q35(B) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry

The angles of depression of two ships from the top of a lighthouse and on the same side of it are found to be and . If the ships are 200 m apart and one ship is exactly behind the other, then find the height of the lighthouse.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The angle of depression from the top equals the angle of elevation at the ship (alternate angles).

Hint 2

With the 45° angle, the nearer ship's distance from the foot equals the height .

Hint 3

For the farther ship the base is ; use and solve for .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure (in words):

    • AB = is the lighthouse, with B at its foot.
    • C and D are the ships, on the same line through B, with D beyond C and CD = 200 m.
    • The angles of depression from A are 45° (to C) and 30° (to D).
    • Hence and [alternate angles].

  3. ...(i)

    ½ mark
  4. In right :

    1 mark
  5. ½ mark
  6. m m

So the height of the lighthouse is m.

    1 mark

Answer: m (≈ 273.2 m)

Where the marks are

  • Draws a correct labelled figure (1 mark)
  • Uses tan 45° in triangle ABC (1 mark)
  • Gets BC = h (½ mark)
  • Uses tan 30° with base h + 200 (1 mark)
  • Rationalises the denominator (½ mark)
  • Gets h = 100(√3 + 1) m (1 mark)
