Q35(a) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry

A TV tower stands vertically on the bank of a canal. From a point on the other bank directly opposite the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is . From another point 20 m away from the point on the line joining this point to the foot of the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is . Find the height of the tower.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw the tower and mark both observation points on the same straight line through its foot. The farther point is 20 m beyond the nearer one.

Hint 2

Let the canal width be . Write the tangent of each angle as height over horizontal distance.

Hint 3

From you get . Put this into the equation and solve for .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Let AB = m be the tower, with foot A and top B. C is the point on the opposite bank, with AC = m and . D is 20 m beyond C on line AC, so AD = m and . Also .

  4. Substitute (1) in (2): , so , giving m.

    ½ mark
  5. From (1), m m. Hence the height of the tower is m.

    ½ mark

Answer: Height of tower = m ≈ 17.32 m (the width of the canal is 10 m)
