Q35(b) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry

An aeroplane when flying at a height of 4000 m from the ground passes vertically above another aeroplane at an instant when the angles of elevation of the two planes from the same point on the ground are and respectively. Find the vertical distance between the aeroplanes at that instant. (Use )

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Both planes lie on the same vertical line, so they share the same horizontal distance from the observer.

Hint 2

Use with the 4000 m height to find that horizontal distance.

Hint 3

Use to find the lower plane's height, then subtract it from 4000 m. Rationalise before substituting .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: P is the point on the ground and A is the point on the ground vertically below both planes, with PA = m. The higher plane is at C, with AC = 4000 m and . The lower plane is at B on AC, with AB = m and . Also .

    1 mark
  2. In right : , so , i.e. .

    1½ marks
  3. In right : , so m. Hence m.

    1½ marks
  4. Vertical distance between the planes:

    ½ mark
  5. Using : m.

    ½ mark

Answer: Vertical distance = m ≈ 1693.33 m

Where the marks are

  • Correct labelled figure (1 mark)
  • Uses to get (1½ marks)
  • Uses to get (1½ marks)
  • Writes distance (½ mark)
  • Final value ≈ 1693.33 m using (½ mark)
