CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 34

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/1/1, section D, question 34, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q34 · 5 marks · Long answerAreas Related to Circles

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Segment = sector − triangle. Start with the area of the 60° sector.

Hint 2

With a 60° angle between two equal radii, what kind of triangle do you get? Use .

Hint 3

The major segment is whatever remains of the whole circle after removing the minor segment.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Here cm and .
    Area of sector

    1 mark
  2. The two radii are equal and the angle between them is , so the triangle formed by the chord and the radii is equilateral with side 14 cm.
Area of triangle (the same as ).

    1 mark
  3. Area of minor segment area of sector area of triangle
    (about if is used).

    1 mark
  4. Area of circle
Area of major segment area of circle area of minor segment

    1 mark
  5. (about if is used).

    1 mark

Answer: Minor segment ; Major segment

Where the marks are

  • Area of sector (1 mark)
  • Area of equilateral triangle (1 mark)
  • Minor segment area to (1 mark)
  • Subtracts the minor segment from the circle area (616 cm²) (1 mark)
  • Major segment area (1 mark)
