Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
First find the smaller segment: sector minus triangle.
Hint 2
With a 90° angle at the centre, the triangle has two perpendicular sides of 5 cm.
Hint 3
Major segment = whole circle − minor segment.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Area of minor segment = area of sector − area of formed by the two radii and the chord. With the triangle is right-angled at the centre:
cm. - 1 mark
Area of major segment = area of circle − area of minor segment
cm.
Answer: cm²
Where the marks are
- Finds the minor segment area cm² (1 mark)
- Subtracts it from the circle's area to get the major segment cm² (1 mark)
