CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic sample paper 2023-24: question 33

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section D, question 33, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33 · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

Prove that if a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points, the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.

In PQR, S and T are points on PQ and PR respectively. and . Prove that PQR is an isosceles triangle.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

For the theorem, join BE and CD and compare areas of triangles that share the same height.

Hint 2

Triangles DBE and DEC have the same base DE and lie between the same parallels, so their areas are equal.

Hint 3

For the second part, the equal ratios give (converse of BPT). Compare the corresponding angles with the given angle.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Given: In , , with D on AB and E on AC. To prove: .
Construction: Join BE and CD. Draw and .

    ½ mark
  2. and
    ...(1)

    1 mark
  3. and
    ...(2)

    1 mark
  4. and lie on the same base DE and between the same parallels DE and BC, so .
    Hence, from (1) and (2), . Proved.

    ½ mark
  5. Second part: In , , so [converse of BPT].
    Therefore [corresponding angles].

    1 mark
  6. Also [given], so .
[sides opposite equal angles are equal]. Hence is isosceles.

    1 mark

Answer: BPT proved; , so is isosceles

Where the marks are

  • Given, to prove, construction and figure (1/2 mark)
  • Ratio of areas gives (1 mark)
  • Ratio of areas gives (1 mark)
  • Equal areas of and used to conclude (1/2 mark)
  • by the converse of BPT, and (1 mark)
  • , hence and the triangle is isosceles (1 mark)
