  1. (i) Fowler was a young writer of spy stories. He was curious to meet a real secret agent and expected someone slim, smart and adventurous. He hoped to see thrill and danger and to find inspiration for his writing.

  2. (ii) Bholi's father, Ramlal, is a simple, traditional villager who cares more about family honour than his daughter's feelings. He neglects her because of her looks and speech and agrees to marry her to an older man. Yet he is not heartless, and at the end he respects her refusal and stands by her.

  3. (iii) Ebright wanted more than to collect butterflies. He wished to study their life cycle scientifically, observe metamorphosis and run real experiments such as tagging. He hoped to discover new facts and become a serious scientist, not a hobbyist.
