Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Personal ambition: Griffin is driven by a strong desire for scientific breakthroughs. He isolates himself to work on his experiments and puts his goals above social and ethical considerations.

    2 marks
  2. Unintended consequences: Invisibility makes him physically vulnerable, so he must steal and deceive to get warmth, clothes and food. It also brings paranoia and cuts him off from human relationships.

    2 marks
  3. Society's reaction: People first react with curiosity and fear, which turns to hostility as his actions grow desperate and harmful. A cycle of aggression and retaliation develops, and their lack of understanding deepens his resentment and estrangement. Together these shape him into an isolated, violent figure.

    2 marks

Answer: Griffin's ambition, the burdens of invisibility and society's hostility together turn him from a scientist into an alienated, aggressive man.
