Read the given extracts and answer any one of the two questions given below.

And suddenly Bholi noticed that the teacher was standing by her side, smiling at her. “What’s your name, little one?” “Bh-Bho-Bho-.” She could stammer no further than that. Then she began to cry and tears flowed from her eyes in a helpless flood. She kept her head down as she sat in her corner, not daring to look up at the girls who, she knew, were still laughing at her. When the school bell rang, all the girls scurried out of the classroom, but Bholi dared not leave her corner. Her head still lowered, she kept on sobbing. “Bholi.” The teacher’s voice was so soft and soothing! In all her life she had never been called like that. It touched her heart. (Bholi)

Hint 1

Which option describes a tone the teacher would not use?

Hint 2

Ask what we learn about Bholi only because we see through her eyes.

Hint 3

Contrast the teacher's actions with what the girls do.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) C, 'settling': the teacher's tone would be reassuring, comforting and calming, whereas 'settling' is not a tone.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Seeing events through Bholi's eyes gives direct insight into her thoughts and feelings, so we feel her vulnerability and distress. It also shows more strongly the effect of the teacher's kindness and the girls' cruel laughter, drawing readers into her world.

    2 marks
  3. (iii) 'uncontrollably': a flood cannot be stopped.

    1 mark
  4. (iv) The teacher is kind and gentle, smiling and speaking softly, while the girls are insensitive and cruel, laughing at Bholi's stammer and distress.

    1 mark

Answer: (i) C; (ii) Bholi's perspective gives emotional insight; (iii) uncontrollably; (iv) kindness vs cruelty
