Q5(A) · 5 marks · WritingCompetency-basedWriting Skills

The visual given shows the life cycle of a butterfly. Study the information carefully and then summarise it in the form of an analytical paragraph. Make comparisons and draw conclusions wherever applicable.

Figure in the paper: Circular flow diagram titled 'Life Cycle of Butterfly' with arrows running clockwise: Egg (on a leaf) → Caterpillar (larva, striped, on a leaf) → Pupa (chrysalis hanging from a twig) → Emerging Butterfly (from pupa) → Adult Butterfly (open wings) → back to Egg. Each stage is labelled. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Follow the arrows around the cycle in order.

Hint 2

Compare the caterpillar with the adult butterfly.

Hint 3

End with a conclusion about the cycle.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Model paragraph:

The diagram shows the life cycle of a butterfly, which passes through four distinct stages in a continuous cycle. It begins with an egg laid on a leaf. The egg hatches into a caterpillar (larva), which feeds on leaves and grows rapidly. The caterpillar then becomes a pupa, or chrysalis, hanging from a twig. Unlike the active caterpillar, the pupa is stationary, yet major changes take place inside it. Finally the adult emerges and spreads its wings. While the larva only eats and grows, the adult flies and reproduces by laying eggs, thus restarting the cycle. It can be concluded that a butterfly undergoes complete metamorphosis, with each stage differing greatly in form and function.

    5 marks

Answer: An analytical paragraph of about 120 words comparing the stages (egg, larva, pupa, adult) and concluding that the butterfly undergoes complete metamorphosis in a cycle.
