RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, UPI and e-Wallets: ISC Class 11 Business Studies

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) transfers money individually and immediately, mainly for large amounts; NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer) settles in batches; IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) gives instant transfers at any time; UPI (Unified Payments Interface) links bank accounts to a mobile app for instant payments using a virtual payment address. E-wallets store money for payments, and the digital rupee is the digital form of the currency issued by the central bank.

Match the need to the mode: large urgent sums use RTGS, routine ones NEFT, small instant ones IMPS or UPI, shops use e-Wallets, and digital cash is the digital

Understand Fund Transfer: RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, UPI, e-Wallets and the Digital Rupee

RTGS. Continuous, real-time settlement of each transaction separately (gross) between banks; used for large-value payments; final and irrevocable. A minimum amount applies (as fixed by the RBI at present; check the current rule).

NEFT. Electronic transfer settled in batches at fixed intervals (in half-hourly batches in the recent system). No minimum amount in general; suited to routine transfers.

IMPS. Instant interbank transfer using the account number and IFSC, mobile number and MMID; works around the clock, including holidays.

UPI. A system that combines several bank accounts into one mobile app. A customer creates a virtual payment address (VPA) and pays or collects money by scanning a QR code, using the VPA or mobile number, confirming with a UPI PIN. Features: instant, 24x7, no need to share bank details, request-to-pay.

e-Wallets. Prepaid digital accounts on a phone; money is loaded from a bank account or card and used to pay bills and merchants. Advantages: quick, offers; limits: balance caps, need for secure use.

Digital rupee. The digital form of legal tender issued by the Reserve Bank of India as a central bank digital currency. It is held in a digital wallet and is like cash in digital form.

Demand draft (DD). A prepaid instrument issued by a bank to be paid to a named payee on demand; safer than a cheque; can now also be requested online.

Choice. Large and urgent: RTGS. Regular: NEFT. Small and urgent anytime: IMPS or UPI. Face-to-face merchant payment: UPI/QR.

Safety. Verify payee details; never share UPI PIN; beware of fake collect requests.
