Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Flux measures how much field passes through a surface; think of the dot product E·dS.

Hint 2

For a plane sheet, use a cylinder (pill-box) that crosses the sheet, with both end faces parallel to it.

Hint 3

Only the two end faces contribute flux.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Electric flux through a surface is the total number of electric field lines crossing it normally, i.e. the surface integral of the field: . It is a scalar. SI unit: N m² C⁻¹ (equivalently V m).

    1 mark
  2. (b) Take an infinite plane sheet with uniform surface charge density σ. By symmetry, E is perpendicular to the sheet and has the same magnitude on both sides. Choose a Gaussian cylinder of cross-section A piercing the sheet, with its flat faces equidistant from it on either side and point P on one face.

  3. ½ mark
  4. [the curved surface is parallel to E]

    ½ mark
  5. Charge enclosed . By Gauss's law , directed normally away from the sheet for σ > 0 and independent of distance.

Answer: (a) , unit N m² C⁻¹; (b)

Where the marks are

  • Definition of electric flux with SI unit (1 mark)
  • Gaussian cylinder with symmetry argument (½ mark)
  • Flux split into the three surfaces (½ mark)
  • Total flux = 2EA (½ mark)
  • Charge σA and result (½ mark)
