CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 31(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section E, question 31(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q31(b) · 5 marks · Long answerElectric Charges and Fields

(i) An electric dipole of dipole moment p consists of point charges q and q, separated by 2a. Derive an expression for electric potential in terms of its dipole moment at a point at a distance x ( a) from its centre and lying (I) along its axis, and (II) along its bisector line.
(ii) An electric dipole of dipole moment Cm is placed in an electric field . Calculate the magnitude of the torque acting on it and the angle it makes with the x-axis, at this instant.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Potential is a scalar: add kq/r for each charge, using the correct distances.

Hint 2

For the torque, take the cross product using î × k̂ = −ĵ and ĵ × k̂ = î, then find its magnitude and direction.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i)(I) Axial point P at distance x from the centre, on the side of +q. Distance from +q is and from −q is . So .

Answer: (I) V = p/(4πε₀x²) on the axis; (II) V = 0 on the bisector; (ii) |τ| = 1.0 × 10⁻²² N m, at about 53° to the x-axis (towards −y).

Where the marks are

  • Potentials due to both charges at the axial point (½ mark)
  • Expression in terms of p (½ mark)
  • Approximation for x ≫ a giving p/(4πε₀x²) (½ mark)
  • Equal distances of both charges from the bisector point (½ mark)
  • Sum of the two potentials written (½ mark)
  • V = 0 on the bisector (½ mark)
  • τ⃗ = p⃗ × E⃗ evaluated (½ mark)
  • Magnitude expression (½ mark)
  • |τ| = 10⁻²² N m (½ mark)
  • Angle ≈ 53° with the x-axis (½ mark)
