Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think about the sign of magnetic susceptibility for each type.

Hint 2

Negative susceptibility means the material weakens the field inside it; positive means it strengthens it.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (A) Diamagnetic substance: draw a specimen placed in a uniform external field with the field lines bending away (repelled) around it; fewer lines pass through the specimen, so the line density inside is less than outside (field inside is weakened).

    1 mark
  2. (B) Paramagnetic substance: draw the field lines bending towards and crowding into the specimen; the line density inside is more than outside (field inside is slightly enhanced).

    1 mark

Answer: Diamagnetic: lines expelled/fewer inside; Paramagnetic: lines drawn in/concentrated inside

Where the marks are

  • Diagram showing field lines repelled from a diamagnetic specimen (1 mark)
  • Diagram showing field lines concentrated inside a paramagnetic specimen (1 mark)
