CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2023-24: question 33(b)

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section E, question 33(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33(b) · 5 marks · Long answerAlternating Current

a. A series LCR circuit is connected to an ac source. Using the phasor diagram, derive the expression for the impedance of the circuit.
b. Plot a graph to show the variation of current with frequency of the ac source, explaining the nature of its variation for two different resistances and () at resonance.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use current as the reference phasor, since it is common to all three series elements.

Hint 2

and point in opposite directions, so combine them first, then add at right angles.

Hint 3

At resonance , so the peak current depends only on .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. a. Let be applied to L, C and R in series. The same current flows through all three elements. The voltage amplitudes are , and .

  2. Phasor diagram (described): and lie along the same line. is perpendicular to and leads it by . is opposite to and lags by . Taking , the net reactive voltage is , perpendicular to .

    1 mark
  3. The source voltage is the phasor sum of these, so by Pythagoras:

  4. Hence .

The impedance is . The phase angle is .

  5. b. Graph of against for both resistances:

    • Each curve rises to a peak at the resonant frequency , where and , so . On either side of the current falls.
    • Curve (i), for , has the higher and sharper peak, because .
    • Curve (ii), for , has a lower and broader peak.
    • Both peaks occur at the same , since does not depend on .
    1 mark

Answer: ; at resonance , the curve has a higher, sharper peak and the curve a lower, broader peak.

Where the marks are

  • States the same current through all elements and the voltage amplitudes , , (1 mark)
  • Correct phasor diagram with the phase relations (1 mark)
  • Applies Pythagoras: (1 mark)
  • Obtains (and ) (1 mark)
  • Resonance curves: same ; gives a higher, sharper peak than (1 mark)
