CBSE Class 12 Physics 2023: question 27(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 55/1/1, section C, question 27(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q27(a) · 3 marks · Short answerAlternating Current
How does the resistance differ from impedance ? With the help of a suitable phasor diagram, obtain an expression for impedance of a series LCR circuit, connected to a source .

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
In a series circuit the current is the same through all elements — draw it as the reference phasor.
Hint 2
leads and lags the current by 90°.
Hint 3
Apply Pythagoras to the resultant of the phasors.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Difference: resistance is the opposition offered by a resistor to both AC and DC and is independent of frequency, whereas impedance is the combined opposition of R, L and C to AC only and depends on the frequency of the source.
