Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Let X be the prize amount. List the values it can take.

Hint 2

Each probability is (number of tickets with that prize) ÷ 10.

Hint 3

Mean = Σ X·P(X).

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let be the prize value (in ₹) on the ticket drawn.

Then can take the values , and .

    1 mark
  2. Probabilities, out of 10 tickets:

    842
    3 marks
  3. Mean:

So the mean value of the prize is ₹ 4.20.

    1 mark

Answer: Mean prize = 42/10 = ₹ 4.20

Where the marks are

  • Identifies values of X as 8, 4, 2 (1 mark)
  • Correct probability distribution 1/5, 1/2, 3/10 with XP(X) column (3 marks)
  • Mean = 42/10 = ₹ 4.20 (1 mark)
