CBSE Class 12 Mathematics 2023: question 35(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 65/5/1, section D, question 35(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q35(a) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedProbability
In answering a question on a multiple choice test, a student either knows the answer or guesses. Let be the probability that he knows the answer and be the probability that he guesses. Assuming that a student who guesses at the answer will be correct with probability . What is the probability that the student knows the answer, given that he answered it correctly ?

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Name three events: the student knows the answer, the student guesses, and the student answers correctly.
Hint 2
If he knows the answer, what is the chance of being correct? If he guesses, it is 1/3.
Hint 3
You need P(knows | correct). Use Bayes' theorem with the two cases in the denominator.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Define the events:
- : the student knows the answer
- : the student guesses the answer
- : the student answers correctly
- ½ mark
Prior probabilities: and .
- 1 mark
Conditional probabilities:
- A student who knows the answer is certainly correct, so .
- A student who guesses is correct with probability , so .
- 1½ marks
By Bayes' theorem:
- 1 mark
Simplify:
So the probability that the student knew the answer, given that he answered correctly, is .
Answer: 9/11
Where the marks are
- Defines the events (knows, guesses, answers correctly) (1 mark)
- Writes P(A) = 3/5 and P(B) = 2/5 (½ mark)
- Writes P(E|A) = 1 and P(E|B) = 1/3 (1 mark)
- Applies Bayes' theorem with correct substitution (1½ marks)
- Obtains 9/11 (1 mark)
