China: after reforms in the late 1970s, China grew at a near double-digit rate (10.3%) in 1980–90, when many countries struggled to grow even 5%.
- 1 mark
China's growth then slowed to 6.8% in 2015–17 and sharply to 3.0% in 2022.
- 1 mark
India: India grew at a reasonable 5.7% in 1980–90, and its growth rose to 7.3% in 2015–17 and stayed high at 7.0% in 2022.
- 1 mark
So China was far ahead in the 1980s, but India has overtaken China's growth rate in recent years (and both now grow faster than Pakistan in 2015–17 and 2022).
Answer: China grew much faster in the 1980s (10.3% vs 5.7%), but its growth slowed to 6.8% and 3.0%, while India's rose to 7.3% and 7.0%, overtaking China.
