Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Look for chemical sprays and factory chimneys in Panel A.

Hint 2

Compare yields of the two methods.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (I) Panel A: conventional (chemical-based) farming. Panel B: organic farming.

    1 mark
  2. (II) Advantage: organic farming uses organic inputs such as manure and compost instead of chemicals; being chemical-free, it conserves the soil (and gives healthier food).

    1½ marks
  3. (II) Disadvantage: yields from organic farming are lower than from conventional farming, so small and marginal farmers may find it hard to adapt for large-scale production.

    1½ marks

Answer: (I) A: conventional farming; B: organic farming. (II) Advantage: chemical-free, conserves soil; disadvantage: lower yields.

Where the marks are

  • Two types identified (½ + ½)
  • One advantage (1½) and one disadvantage (1½)
