Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Money multiplier = 1/reserve ratio.

Hint 2

Total reserves end up equal to the first deposit.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Each round: loans = 80% of deposits, reserves = 20%. (i) Round II loans = 0.8 × 800 = 640.

  2. Totals: deposits = 1,000 × 1/0.2 = 5,000 (ii); loans = 5,000 − 1,000 = 4,000 (iii); reserves = 0.2 × 5,000 = 1,000 (iv) (equal to the initial deposit). So 640, 5,000, 4,000, 1,000. Option (D).
