CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2026: question 27

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 56/1/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerAlcohols, Phenols and Ethers

Write the reaction involved in the following :
(a) Reimer-Tiemann reaction
(b) Kolbe's reaction
(c) Friedel-Crafts acylation of anisole

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Reimer–Tiemann uses CHCl₃ and NaOH; Kolbe uses CO₂.

Hint 2

The –OCH₃ group directs substitution to the ortho and para positions.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Reimer–Tiemann reaction: phenol treated with chloroform in aqueous NaOH introduces –CHO at the ortho position. The intermediate (substituted benzal chloride, then sodium salicylaldehyde) is acidified to give salicylaldehyde:
    (salicylaldehyde)

    1 mark
  2. (b) Kolbe's reaction: sodium phenoxide reacts with (about 400 K, 4–7 atm) to give sodium salicylate, which is acidified to give salicylic acid:
    (2-hydroxybenzoic acid)

    1 mark
  3. (c) Friedel–Crafts acylation of anisole:

The products are 4-methoxyacetophenone (major) and 2-methoxyacetophenone (minor).

    1 mark

Answer: (a) Phenol → salicylaldehyde; (b) sodium phenoxide → salicylic acid; (c) anisole → 4-methoxyacetophenone (major) + 2-methoxyacetophenone (minor)

Where the marks are

  • Reimer–Tiemann reaction with reagents and product (1 mark)
  • Kolbe's reaction with conditions and product (1 mark)
  • Friedel–Crafts acylation of anisole with AlCl₃ and o/p products (1 mark)
