CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2023: question 23(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 56/1/1, section B, question 23(b), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q23(b) · 2 marks · Very short answerAlcohols, Phenols and Ethers

(i) Write the mechanism of the following reaction :

(ii) Write the equation involved in Reimer-Tiemann reaction.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Acid first converts –OH into a better leaving group.

Hint 2

Water leaves to give a carbocation; what does the carbocation lose next to form a double bond?

Hint 3

In Reimer–Tiemann, a –CHO group enters the ortho position of phenol.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Step 1 – Protonation of the alcohol:
    (fast)

    ½ mark
  2. Step 2 – Formation of carbocation (slow, rate-determining):

Step 3 – Loss of proton:

    ½ mark
  3. (ii) Reimer–Tiemann reaction: Phenol is heated with chloroform and aqueous NaOH, forming a dichloromethyl (–CHCl₂) intermediate at the ortho position. Hydrolysis then gives sodium salicylaldehyde, and acidification gives salicylaldehyde:
    (2-hydroxybenzaldehyde)

    1 mark

Answer: (i) Protonation → carbocation (slow) → loss of H⁺ giving ethene; (ii) phenol + CHCl₃/aq NaOH, then H⁺ → salicylaldehyde

Where the marks are

  • Any two correct steps of the dehydration mechanism (½ + ½ mark)
  • Correct Reimer–Tiemann equation giving salicylaldehyde (1 mark)
